• Congratulations! to Teal Stanley of Greensboro, NC as Fourth Place runner up in the 2013 Southern Open. 
• Congratulations! to John Estes of Rockvale, TN as the winner of the 2013 Southern Majors Open. John won the 2004 Southern Majors and the 2005 Southern Masters but hasn't studied since then, saying he would play up if he gets back to studying checkers and back on his game.
• Frank Davis President of Southern States Checker Association opened the business meeting at 10:00am Friday morning with prayer by Ken Christian, our SSCA Vice-President. Frank welcomed 18 players, saying we were a little smaller in number than last year's 22 participants, but it looked like a very strong group of checker players. We had 18 players from 6 states (7 Masters, 11 Majors played) 7 from TN; 4 from NC; 4 from KY; and 1 each from AL, IN, & WV.
• Frank covered the playing rules, tournament agenda, and schedule. Things such as: 8 rounds of tournament play with 3 rounds Friday, 4 rounds Saturday, and 1 round Sunday, to be played as posted on the Schedule displayed on the bulletin board with starting and finishing times.
• Lateness for play would be penalized by forfeiting a game if over 15 minutes late and if a hour late it would be ruled as a forfeit for both games or a round forfeit. The bye would be 3 points and treated as a random for the first if needed to balance pairing opponents; thereafter, to the lowest point man and additional byes are awarded as 2 points. We elected to repair only in the last rounds if necessary. The standard 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and zero points for a loss will be counted as game points. You must stay on schedule as for time limits allowed for the games and rounds as 1 1/4 hours per game making a  2 1/2 hour per round.
• Frank Davis said a time limit of 1 minute per move for 10 minutes would be applied to conclude overtime games, if that didn't determine the results then he would make a judgment call to terminate the overtime game in order to stay on schedule. He also has the option to solicit the aid of another Master to help judge the results. On Master overtime games a computer program (KingRow analysis) may be requested, and could be used if both Master players agreed, and at least a 60+ point score is needed to declare a win.
• Frank Davis reported on the W.C. Green Trust Fund saying this year we had $250.00 applied toward the prize fund and next year the Morgantown Bank indicated it would be approximately 1% of the principle fund balance of $7,300.00 or $73.00.
• Ken Christian was again recognized for his effort on soliciting and gathering up the nice door prizes. Most of the prizes were from The Wilson Co/Lebanon Chamber or Commerce, The Wilson Co Bank & Trust, and the Wilson Co. Convention & Visitor Center.
• Davis also announced the 2014 Tennessee State Open will be held March 7th - 9th, 2014 in Lebanon, TN with a Prize Fund of $5-6,000 in honor of “Leonard Hickman In-Memoriam” TCA (Tennessee Checker Association) wanted to get the word out early and advertised throughout ACF, MCA, and other checker sites so all the checker players of the USA, and other countries would know about this tournament. The officers (Frank Davis, Larry Keen, and Ken Christian) of TCA decided that they would increase the prize fund so that the funds from Gene Lindsay's and Leonard Hickman's accounts would be applied to the tournament according to their instructions and with the intent of the donors' wishes. TCA's decision to increase the payout was because it would stimulate interest, emphasize the bequeath person's name, highlight, and draw attention to their intent. Checker Players would remember who Leonard Hickman, and particularly who Gene Lindsay was in years down the road instead of mincing out the money in an insignificant amount and players would not remember who really supported and gave financially to these checker tournaments. Let's make the prize fund large enough to build interest and attendance, get more players to the tournaments! Talk up checkers to friends and keep this great pastime alive and hopefully others will follow suit with estate gifts. Bigger payouts should increase more interest in checkers and increase players playing checkers.
• Frank Davis further explained that Leonard Hickman Fund would apply $500 toward both Majors' and Minors' Divisions, and another $2,500 would be applied to the tournament prize fund from the Gene Lindsay Fund plus interest and the players' entry fees. These funds are secure in a deposit account at F & M Bank in Clarksville, TN under the signatures of three TCA officers for safety so the funds can't be mismanaged by one person, as in the past when little or no controls were in place and the checker money disappeared.
• It was also announced that the ACF GAYP National was just three weeks away, Monday through Saturday, July 29 through August 3rd.
• GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given by WCDF to distinguish accomplished players.
• ACF Ratings before this tournament are supplied by ICH Checkers www.icheckers.net. Tournament score-sheets are processed by JR Smith and the after ratings reflect this update above and also available at icheckers ratings.
• "T" separates player's opponent from player's accumulated game points.  Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4.
• We re-elected the same officers for another year, as Frank Davis President of SSCA (Southern States Checker Association), Ken Christian as V-P, and Mary Davis as Secretary /Treasurer.
• We appreciated the donations and contributions to the Southern this year as: Frank Davis $100, Larry Keen $100, John Webster $50, and Ted Williamson $20 which help make up the total cash prize fund of $915.00, but actual payout by sponsor was $920.00 because of rounding up to whole dollars.
• Many wives, friends, and family attended, namely: Mary Davis, Shirley Lerum, Paralee Shultz, Mickie Webster, Linda Morrison, Bernice Powell, and several players brought their grandchildren.
• Frank and Mary, our referee and scorekeeper did a fantastic job as usual.
• We appreciate Frank & Mary Davis for hosting our Saturday lunch pizza party, which included a variety of toppings and a mix of different cookies, with cold drinks or water.
• Hotel Management continues to make improvements to the hotel which again shows their appreciation for our Checker Players patronage which encourages the TCA & SSCA directors to sticking with this hotel as our tournament venue.
• Comfort Suites offers Checker Players a discount of their normal $129.95 rooms at $59.95 plus tax (Tennessee Tax 16.24% = Total $69.69 per night), When you reserve early you get an option of KING, OUEENS, or their PRESIDENTIAL when available, at same discounted price. Located just across I-40 at 904 Murfreesboro Road, Lebanon, TN, US, 37090, Phone: (615) 443-002. This is obviously a limited offer to get players to up grade to Comfort Suites, but they also will eventually want a 40 room commitment for the free use of their conference meeting room. We will also need to move the traditional dates of the TN State Open a week before (1st weekend in March) or after it because the Tennessee Cattlemen's Club books up Comfort Suites for their annual convention on our March dates. 
• The majority of players attended Sunday Service, which was opened by Frank Davis, invocation by Ted Williamson, Ken Christian sang "Amazing Grace", Ted Williamson invited his nephew Kevin and Debby Williamson, "The Williamson Family Singers" to sing and play for us. Kevin was committed to play at another event so Debby and their three daughters performed and blessed us with their gospel music. Melody age 14 played fiddle, Kadence age 10 played base guitar, Caroline age 4 all harmonized with Mother. Kadence did some clogging also. Ted delivered an inspiring message. We took up a collection for the Williamson Singers for coming out and entertaining us.
• A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended. Good Players - Good Fellowship!
